Ha Giang Loop — 3 Days vs 4 Days

Detailed comparison of 3-day and 4-day Ha Giang Loop itineraries — daily breakdown, distances, what's covered, pace differences, and how to decide which suits your trip.

Updated April 2026

The Ha Giang Loop is most commonly done as a 3-day tour, but there’s a popular 4-day version that covers the same core route with a slower pace and extra stops. Both loops start and end in Ha Giang City and both cover Ma Pi Leng Pass, the Nho Que River, and Du Gia village. The difference is how much riding you do per day and how much time you spend off the bike. This guide breaks down both itineraries and helps you pick.

The 3-day Ha Giang Loop tour starts from $186; the 4-day version from approximately $230.

Rule of thumb: If your total Vietnam trip is 10 days or less, take the 3-day loop. If you have 2+ weeks in Vietnam and want to go deeper, the 4-day is worth it.

The 3-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Ha Giang City → Yen Minh → Dong Van (~140 km)

Morning departure around 8:30 AM after breakfast at Hong Hao Hostel.

  • Bac Sum Pass — first major climb out of Ha Giang City, karst views begin
  • Heaven’s Gate (Quan Ba Pass) — panoramic viewpoint of the “fairy mountains” / Twin Mountains of Tam Son
  • Yen Minh lunch stop — local Vietnamese noodles or rice dish
  • Can Ty pine forest — short ride through pine-lined road
  • Dong Van arrival late afternoon — hotel check-in, shower, evening free in the Old Quarter

Day 1 is the most riding-heavy but also the most scenic climb — you gain altitude continuously. Pace is set so you arrive with daylight for a walk through Dong Van’s Old Quarter market.

Day 2: Dong Van → Ma Pi Leng Pass → Du Gia (~150 km)

The big day — Ma Pi Leng Pass sits right at the start.

  • Ma Pi Leng Pass — 20 km of cliff-edge road at 1,500m elevation, sheer drops to Nho Que Canyon
  • Ma Pi Leng viewpoint — coffee stop, photos, longer pause
  • Death Cliff sky path — short walk on a cliff edge (entirely optional)
  • Nho Que River boat — 30-minute boat ride through the canyon (included)
  • Meo Vac lunch — market town, traditional meal
  • Mau Due — quieter villages, rice terraces
  • Du Gia arrival — traditional stilt-house homestay, family dinner, campfire with locals

Day 2 is the signature day. Most travellers rank Ma Pi Leng as one of the best road experiences of their lives.

Day 3: Du Gia → Du Gia Waterfall → Ha Giang City (~120 km)

Relaxed final day with swimming if the weather allows.

  • Du Gia Waterfall — swimming in a natural pool surrounded by jungle
  • Lung Tam village — Hmong weaving cooperative (optional)
  • Route back via highway 34 — descending out of the mountains
  • Ha Giang City arrival around 3–4 PM
  • Evening bus back to Hanoi (arrives Hanoi ~6 AM next day)

Day 3 is shorter and mostly downhill — a gentler ride to finish on.

The 4-Day Itinerary

The 4-day version keeps the same Days 1, 2, and final-day-structure, but inserts an extra day between Days 2 and 3.

Day 1: Same as 3-day (Ha Giang City → Dong Van, ~140 km)

Same route and stops.

Day 2: Dong Van → Ma Pi Leng → Meo Vac (~80 km)

Shorter day. Stops at the same Ma Pi Leng viewpoints but without the push to Du Gia afterwards. Overnight in Meo Vac.

Extra time for:

  • Longer Ma Pi Leng viewpoint stops
  • Nho Que boat (sometimes extended ride)
  • Meo Vac market if it’s Sunday (one of the largest Hmong markets in the region)
  • Exploring remote villages around Meo Vac

Day 3: Meo Vac → Tham Ma Pass → Du Gia (~110 km)

The extra day. Covers territory the 3-day skips:

  • Tham Ma Pass — “9 turns pass,” dramatic hairpin switchbacks
  • Lung Cu flag tower — northernmost point of Vietnam, border with China (optional detour)
  • Remote villages — Hmong, Lo Lo, Tay ethnic communities
  • Longer Du Gia arrival — arrive before dinner with time for a village walk

Day 4: Same as 3-day Day 3 (Du Gia → Ha Giang City)

Same route home.

What the Extra Day Actually Gets You

Worth the extra money for…Not worth it if…
Tham Ma Pass (additional scenic pass)You’re happy with Ma Pi Leng as the main pass
Lung Cu flag tower (northernmost Vietnam)You don’t care about geographical extremes
Sunday Meo Vac marketYou’re not travelling on the right day
Extended Ma Pi Leng photographyYou’re happy with the normal stop length
Ethnic village visitsYou value riding time over walking time
Slower pace overallYou’re fit and enjoy full riding days

For most travellers, Day 2 of the 4-day itinerary (the shorter Dong Van → Meo Vac leg) is the biggest win — you get more time at Ma Pi Leng and more flexibility for weather. For photographers, the extra day is particularly valuable.

Pace Reality Check

The 3-day version is not a rushed or exhausting tour. “150 km” in Ha Giang means 5–7 hours of actual riding spread across a day with frequent stops — you spend roughly equal time on the bike and off it.

What the 4-day adds is not “less tiring” but “more leisurely.” You’re not less tired at the end of a 4-day tour; you just covered more ground over more time. If your concern is whether 3 days is “too much,” it isn’t — the 3-day is accessible for most fitness levels with an easy rider handling the driving.

Who Picks Which

3-day loop:

  • First-time Vietnam visitors combining Ha Giang with Hanoi + Halong Bay + Sapa
  • Travellers with 10-day Vietnam trips (or shorter Southeast Asia loops)
  • Those who want the core experience without extra distance
  • Anyone who can ride hard for 3 days and then relax in Hanoi

4-day loop:

  • Travellers with 14+ days in Vietnam
  • Photographers who want extra time at every viewpoint
  • Those booking during Sunday (for Meo Vac market day)
  • Anyone who prefers slower pace over covering the maximum distance

Budget Comparison

Component3-Day4-Day
Tour fee$186~$230
Extra mealsIncludedIncluded
Extra accommodation (night 3)N/AIncluded
Sleeper bus Hanoi round-tripIncludedIncluded
Tip (optional, recommended)$8–20$10–25
Total budgeted~$200~$250

The $50 difference is small compared to the cost of getting to Vietnam in the first place. The real question is whether you have the extra day, not whether you can afford it.

Booking Notes

Both tour lengths run every day of the year. Accommodation capacity is tighter on the 4-day version in Meo Vac, so autumn peak season (Oct–Nov) books up earliest. The 3-day tour is easier to book last-minute.
